Verdantas (formerly Project Navigator, Ltd.) was selected by the City of Montebello, under a joint U.S. EPA Region 9/DTSC Brownfields Grant, to assess conditions at a former private industrial and municipal landfill on the southern edge of the City, adjacent to the I-5 freeway. The City’s long-term goal is to have the area host improved development to become the City’s southern gateway.
The landfill dates from the 1940’s to 1960’s. Today, the landfill is surface-developed with tilt-up, single-story industrial buildings. Preliminary data suggested the presence of landfill gas and groundwater impacts.
Over a period of two years, Verdantas performed the following landfill characterization tasks, all aligned with the City’s business and land development objectives, atop the former landfill.
Project Highlights
- Integrated prior data and information to formulate a Conceptual (Visual) Site Model (CSM) to assist with City and Verdantas site assessment decision-making.
- Installed gas probes and groundwater monitoring wells to verify the CSM and better define the vertical and lateral extent of impacts, plus quantify the landfill’s methane gas generation rate.
- Perform a one-well landfill gas extraction test to gather design information for an improved gas control system that could possibly be installed in and around existing structures.
- Interact on the City’s behalf with DTSC technical and program managers.
