Verdantas (formerly Horizons Engineering) recently completed a transformative $618,000 water system upgrade for the Copple Crown Village District, funded by NHDES SRF and ARPA. This project was unique in that we completed the basis of design and collaborated closely with the contractor and NHDES in a quasi-design-build approach.
The District’s community water system serves approximately 34 residential connections with a daily usage of 15,300 gallons. A critical challenge emerged when the New Durham Fire Department condemned the clubhouse that housed the system’s treatment, pumping, and storage infrastructure. Rather than constructing a new building, our team repurposed and upgraded the existing Mountain Drive booster station to accommodate all necessary systems.
Key Improvements:
- Installation of a new 4-inch water line connecting the well to the Mountain Drive booster station
- Abandonment of the clubhouse and relocation of all equipment, including treatment systems, VFD pumps, atmospheric and pneumatic storage, and SCADA controls to the upgraded booster station
- Relocation and/or replacement of the Harmsco bag filter, anion exchange units, and SCADA system
- Water main tie-ins near Franconia Drive to reduce pressure in lower elevations and improve service reliability
- Construction of a new atmospheric storage tank and pneumatic tanks
- Repair and/or replacement of existing pumps and refitting of water mains
- Installation of emergency backup generators for all three pump stations
The project not only restored critical infrastructure but also enhanced operational efficiency and long-term sustainability. NHDES expressed strong satisfaction with the outcome, noting the significant improvements in pump stations, metering, telemetry, filtration, and water storage.
