Verdantas provided civil engineering, structural engineering, landscape architecture, land surveying, and construction-phase services to complete the connection between SR 18 and SR 516 through the new Lakepointe Urban Village in Covington, WA. The project created four single-lane roundabouts, 4,000 LF of arterial expansion, and 5,400 LF of new arterial.
The focal point of our efforts was to enhance roadway connectivity and strategically implement single-lane roundabouts at key junctures, such as the westbound and eastbound on- and off-ramps at SR 18 and SE 256th Street, to manage increased traffic to the new development. These roundabouts optimize access to SR 18, prioritize safety, and minimize maintenance requirements. The project features a wildlife crossing/tunnel under Lakepointe Boulevard to connect the critical habitat areas.
Our innovative stormwater design included a collection and conveyance system with adequate capacity and spacing of drainage structures to prevent roadway flooding and improve water quality, including bioretention cells, infiltration galleries, and landscaped buffers. Our structural engineers also designed retaining walls for roadside treatment facilities.
The developer and city worked with an artist to create unique treatment features on the roundabout center islands at SR18, as part of the design for the pedestrian safety railing, and on the exposed face of the retaining walls. PACE coordinated with the artist to integrate these designs into the roadway construction plans and the roundabout landscape design.
