Giant sequoias, the world's largest trees by volume, are found only on the western slopes of California's Sierra Nevada. While these iconic forests evolved alongside frequent low- and moderate-intensity fires, decades of fire suppression, fuel accumulation, prolonged drought, and climate change have increased the risk of catastrophic wildfire, threatening the long-term health and resilience of sequoia groves.

Since 2017, Verdantas (formerly Colibri) has supported Save the Redwoods League's efforts to protect and restore giant sequoia forests throughout California. Working alongside restoration teams, Verdantas conducts surveys for special-status plant and animal species that rely on sequoia forest habitats and provides recommendations to avoid or minimize impacts during forest management activities.

By identifying sensitive biological resources before restoration work begins, Verdantas helps advance fuel reduction, selective thinning, and prescribed burning projects that improve forest resilience while protecting the diverse species that depend on these unique ecosystems. The team's work supports a balanced approach to conservation, helping restore more natural forest conditions and reduce the risk of high-severity wildfire in some of California's most treasured landscapes.
