Since 1997, Verdantas (as Aegis Environmental) has supported Virginia Tech under a long-standing environmental services contract, delivering targeted air permitting and compliance solutions for the university’s central heating plant.
Verdantas led the development of a Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) permit application for planned modifications to the heating plant. This included detailed emissions characterization, feasibility analysis of control technologies for PM₁₀, SO₂, and NOₓ, and advanced air dispersion modeling to assess ambient air quality impacts. The team also evaluated NOₓ control strategies for a new mass stoker boiler and used site-specific monitoring data to establish appropriate emissions limits.
The project culminated in a successfully negotiated permit that met all regulatory requirements while supporting the university’s operational and environmental goals. Verdantas worked closely with Virginia Tech staff, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VADEQ), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Federal Land Managers to ensure a smooth and compliant permitting process.
