Advanced hydraulic modeling backed by over a century of expertise.
At Verdantas Flow Labs, we specialize in solving complex hydraulic challenges through advanced physical modeling and deep expertise in fluid dynamics. Our work supports the design and optimization of civil hydraulic structures—such as spillways, diversions, locks, and pump stations—by simulating real-world conditions using expertly constructed scaled models. This approach helps clients reduce risk, enhance performance, and often realize significant cost savings before construction begins.
Our laboratories in Holden, Massachusetts, and Anderson, South Carolina, offer over 200,000 square feet of combined space, enabling us to build and test multiple large-scale models simultaneously. These facilities are fully equipped with custom-built flow systems, a range of instrumentation, and in-house fabrication shops, allowing us to adapt quickly to project needs and maintain full control over model quality and performance.
We take a collaborative, goal-oriented approach to each project—whether the objective is to validate a design, resolve performance issues, or evaluate alternatives. When it adds value, we utilize a hybrid physical-computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling approach. This combination enhances our ability to simulate complex flow behavior, compare design options, and optimize system performance, while also minimizing the limitations of each modeling technique - resulting in a more efficient and targeted modeling process.
Our team’s expertise extends beyond application. Backed by a legacy dating to 1894, Verdantas has conducted extensive research on vortex formation, vortex suppressors, and scale effects in Froude models—critical considerations in the design of pump intakes and other hydraulic systems. This research informs our modeling practices and reinforces our leadership in the field. Our staff regularly publish in ASCE journals, contribute to industry handbooks, and help shape standards through active roles in the Hydraulic Institute, including leadership on the ANSI/HI 9.8 Intake Design committee and involvement in the ANSI/HI 9.6.6 Pump Piping and Standards Committees.
